Marital problems related to service

Lots of good advice here but what the Coast Guard is still missing is that this isn't the member's problem, it's the Coast Guard's problem. The value proposition just isn't there anymore for most people. Hey, son, how would you like to absolutely fuck up your life and marriage, possibly your kids, and probably develop substance use disorder? Have we got a job for you. Join the Coast Guard! We'll make sure you can never put down roots for as long as you're in. Guaranteed to mess with you.

We're at the lowest unemployment levels since Woodstock, but with high inflation and relatively modest wage growth, spouses both need and largely want to work. The military was formerly a great option in a tight jobs market, especially for those without college prospects, and those who want such a route are also dwindling.

"but needs of the service" - only the service can determine the needs of the service, and it's currently not able to meet its recruiting requirements. I'm reserve, and you couldn't pay me double my civilian salary to go AD these days, with a young family.

However, we may wish to think of ourselves, many of our jobs have civilian analogs where the agency/company doesn't obliterate its employees by moving them every 36 months. Federal law enforcement doesn't do that. EPA doesn't do that.

I'm not saying we do away with PCS, but make it easier and more attractive for members like OP to have normal lives and not have to be martyrs for the cause. People don't want to do that anymore and we have the numbers to prove it.
