Mark Zuckerberg in 2009 when asked if he would share user information: "Of course not."

Unpopular opinion time!

So Facebook is under scrutiny right now because their data was “leaked” but not in the traditional sense. They had an API that let a special group of priveleadged researchers explore more data than normal. Hindsight the way they conducted the program was poor, this obviously lead to abuse which went on to form Cambridge Analytica, this app should be investigated and people should be held responsible. With that said, was Facebook being malicious? They tried to help researchers, and they handled it very poorly. The intent may have been ok to start with but the way it was conducted didn’t have proper oversight. That doesn’t make it ok but I want to give an unpopular opinion that maybe they weren’t trying to be malicious and wasn’t their intent to influence elections like it did.

Alllll that said, I’m speaking to this ONE case in particular, not to any other, and it’s wuite possible this is just one of many incidents that paints a bigger picture.

But if Cambridge Analytica has tought me nothing it’s to always give everything a critical deep look. There is a huge hate train that people love jumping on and I think not all the motivations are correct for doing so.
