Get masters in data science or start career as a developer?

As a developer I honestly don’t see a whole lot hard core of data science tasks that aren’t automated or getting automated:

  • Sklearn/Keras do the ML work for you
    • if your guy can’t use Sklearn or Keras you can just plug data into a pre built ML package (Sagemaker, etc.)
    • The developer is usually responsible for ETL of dats rather than hiring a dedicated data scientist (my experience).

Imo I’d rather hire the guy with 2 years experience than the guy with an MS who knows the ins and outs of big O notation.

That being said there are a lot of people in management that think plugging a CSV to Sklearn is rocket science and requires an MS so it honestly might be helpful given the people who think they need these roles are often divorced from the actual development teams.
