Matthew 1:18-25

I'm taking your post opportunistically to share notes on Matthew 1...these are what i typed up:

Matthew 1:1-18

Summary

Chapter 1 is named as "The Book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ". The genesis of Jesus according to ancestral record set out by Matthew. Jesus's "generation" starts with Abraham (in fact to go to the *very* beginning - Adam - as per Luke's Gospel), thus he is a "son of Abraham" a Jew and also of the Davidic lineage. 3 sets of 14 generations are recorded.

NOTES 1

Gentile women feature among Jesus' ancestors. This is history pre-empting an aspersion against Jesus' legitimacy, firstly if they did not disqualify the kingship of David and Solomon they should neither disqualify Jesus, secondly re: the accusation of "genetic" immorality is unfounded - if the Davidic kingly lineage had "immoral" women number in their ancestry how much more legitimate is Jesus given his divine conception in Mary (given a fortiori logic). The chapter is a "Book in itself", it is sui generis(?) in the sense that while the OT perserves the record of Biblical names and antecedents, The Book of the Genealogy - Matthew Chapter 1 - furnishes the subject in question with *his* ancestral record

NOTES 2

The Gospel of Matthew's ancestral record counterparts Luke's but concentrates on Jesus' Jewish and Davidic credentials and thus his legitimacy as the actual Messiah. 14 X 3 = 42, a biblically significant number which in terms of time indicates the consummation or completion of a sequence.

NOTES 3

Jesus is the consummation and completion of Jewish history. Gentile blood "predicts" the universal scope of his mission. Jesus has the genetic/ancestral credentials for being The Davidic Messiah and the rest of Matthew discloses this fully in the Jewish idiom

AFTERTHOUGHT

Jewish history ("The Old Testament") is the genesis of Jesus

Matthew 1:19-25

SUMMARY

Section outlines how Jesus was born. The betrothal between Joseph and Mary which is a legal marriage in Judaism is dramatically transformed by the discovery by Joseph of Mary's pregnancy ("of the Holy Spirit"). Joseph's uncertainty regarding the marriage which inclines towards NOT putting Mary to shame finds assurance by angelic dream-messenger who gives direction to take Mary as his wife. The son to be born will be called Jesus (God Saves) for he will save his people from their sins. Isaiah is quoted as prophecy is fulfilled. Jesus is born and named

NOTES 1

Joseph is described as Just, Just meaning righteous. He follows the spirit of the Torah rather than the letter of the Torah, he is a kind of jewish prefigurement of what Christians are intended to become. He acts on-command immediately upon waking - no hesitation. Jesus whose name literally means Saviour but when etymologically unpacked expands as "YHWH Saves", Thus the Messiah is annointed by God to save his people. Indicentally , the idea "God Saves" rendered as a concept is redolent of the computer-science notion of a "recursive copy" that duplicates the properties of the original yet while being derivative.

NOTES 2

The plan to send Mary away quietly reveals Joseph would unhesitatingly undergo ridicule for being regarded as somone whose relationship with his betrothed is revealed as infidelitous (according to those who judge by mere appearances). In addition he would undergo this in order to preserve his betrothed's dignity and safety. Remembering that marital unfaithfulness in 1st C Jerusalem could lead to murder(stoning). Someone adhering to the letter of the Torah could exact exactly that. However Joseph is made of different stuff and is reverent of Mary's supernatural pregnancy though he does not understand yet.

NOTES 3

Emmanuel - God is with us, which is proven true of Joseph, God is with him in the sense of overarching guidance from God which he always heeds. Those who obey God, those who obey Jesus, find "God is with us". Jesus' given name confounds the mundane 1st C understanding, absolutely most of all the thing which "his people" need saving from is their own sins which imperil their mortal souls.

AFTERTHOUGHT

The actual fulfilment of Jesus' name is "God Saves (from sin)"
