Max Landis Passionately Talks Screenwriting on Explain Things To Me: "Desperation and fear are the prime motivators in the film industry behind the camera for people who are not artists."

Something we all need to realize is that somewhere in the late 90s, the medium of film has really established and grounded itself. Movies are starting to become timeless. "We've got it figured out now", so to say. The same could be applied to music, "It's all been done before" in a good way. We've covered all the bases, we have an amazing set of fundamentals, now let's make the coolest movies ever based on all this knowledge. We're transitioning into a new world. It's really inspiring because movie making is almost common knowledge even to a lot of viewers. The bar is set and everyone knows where the bar is. It opens up a lot of creativity outside of the box because the box is just second nature. We're getting some on the bar shit, but we're also getting some of the most interesting films ever. This is also why we're seeing a lot of remakes and adaptations of older material. The demand is just naturally there. "This and that was cool in 1985, but imagine what it would be like now! Now that we know where the box is, let's make it that good!" Ignoring studio cash grabbing, this is why these remakes are interesting. (Also that people just want to revisit their old favorites, $ or not.)

Sometimes it works, 21 Jump Street, Lego, etc. Sometimes it doesn't; Transformers, TMNT. Sometimes they need to be left alone; Total Recall, Robocop. We're lucky when they're put in the hands of people like Lord and Miller. We're unlucky when they're put in the hands of people from the old school of thought. People whose mistakes are their actual contribution to the box. The ones still get to make movies because they convinced the $$$ that they built the box. The ones Max is angry with in the video.

I think what Max is really trying to get at is that, there are some seriously amazing ideas that being passed up and talent being wasted (sometimes) on rehashing old material, rather than breaking new ground with things like Innerspace in the 80s, etc. (God, they're going to remake that now, I'm sure of it. Fuck. Totally unnecessary)

If there is any bright light to shine on Max's frustrations, it looks like it's getting better. It's a phase. We know where the box is. We're going to make all of old favorites fit the box for now. Luckily every new film maker is expanding off the box. Things that couldn't exist before, like proper Comic Book movies, are flourishing. Eventually those people inside the box won't even exist anymore. It might be unfortunate for Max that we're not there yet, but he just needs to keep being out there and pushing people to leave the box and turn the page.
