If we're going to indulge in this, and that's a big "if":

To understand a conspiracy, look at the result, assume it's the intended result, and ask, cui bono?

At first glance, covid seems bad for everyone: there's no particular target that gets hurt (the economic shock is bad for pretty much everyone).

But consider: almost the entire planet catastrophically failed to contain covid. Those countries that succeeded are mostly those willing and able to crack down hard, like China, or a couple of weird outliers.

So what covid does do is provide information:

If a bioweapon were released, China would be much more secure against it than the West. China could, if it had to, safely release an extremely dangerous bioweapon, confident that whereas its authoritarian government could minimise its death toll, its rivals would be devastated. Covid, under this hypothesis, was a sort of bioweapon equivalent of the atom bomb tests: a proof-of-concept, proof that a bioweapon would work, would spread, would hit enemy countries hard, but could also be prevented from hitting China itself too hard.

I don't think this is the case. It's too neat, too just-so-story: there's far too many ways it could have gone wrong. (Suppose the virus had turned out to be worse than suspected, or mutated, and everyone had closed borders and let China suffer?)

However, if God descended from Heaven and affirmed that there was a covid conspiracy, that it was deliberately released, this is the motive I'd guess.
