The origin is not even control. The origin is the idea of "spilling seed." The fact that in those times, babies usually didn't make it, and people didn't know shit about science, and thought that every time someone ejaculates for a purpose other than reproduction, it's a danger to the propagation of the human race.

People using it to control women came later, when society had advanced to the point that persisting didn't require 1 person to always be raising the children-- and the original reasoning very, very much stayed alive outside of the cities where even to this day many of them just need as many kids as possible to work, and just 100 years ago half of em were still dying.
