Mayor Jim Throgmorton of Iowa City said the council plans to discuss a sanctuary city status at its work session on Tuesday night. Now is the time to contact the mayor and let him know NOT to make Iowa City a sanctuary status city.

Can you tell me what the advantage of being a sanctuary city is?

  1. They're statistically safer than other cities because the illegal immigrants in the city feel less threatened by law enforcement and are more likely to cooperate in investigations. Without sanctuary, the chilling effect rapidly creates a "no snitch" culture among the Latine community and it becomes vastly more difficult to solve crimes.

  2. It boosts the city's economy because illegal immigrants feel more confident spending their money around town, rather than being too afraid of getting caught to spend a lot of time in public. Rather than just sending all of their money back home, they start spending some of it at convenience stores and bars and restaurants and tattoo parlors and other local businesses.

  3. It incentivizes more illegal immigrants to come into the city, which can be good for the economy overall because it brings in more labor and tax revenue. Added to the fact that they are more bold, and this also means more consumers coming into the city to contribute to the economy as buyers as well as workers.

  4. There's also benefits to the Latine community itself. As more illegal immigrants are drawn to the city and as they become more integrated into the community, the Latine community itself becomes more politically powerful and economically significant. More people going to Sunday Mass, more people shopping at Latine owned stores, more Latine people to date and befriend and marry and watch your kids, ect ect.

  5. Increased trust of law enforcement, increased participation in the community, and more politically powerful Latine community organizations? Those also help to make the city safer, because those are all things that help keep teenagers from getting on the wrong side of the law. Sanctuary cities are extremely good for the children of illegal immigrants, and in turn this is good for the city itself.

Is everyone hung up on stuff he said during the campaign and worried that he might try for the 11million?

Yeah that's the 6th reason - fuck yes we are. I'm aware that it isn't likely to happen, but Trump wasn't likely to get elected and look where we are now! I don't think leaving things to chance is a good idea, so any and all roadblocks that can be put in Trump's way are a good thing in my opinion.

I hope that helps you understand other people's perspective on this.
