McCain backs bill to block transgender troops ban

I agree with your point about the anyone-but-Trumpers and peak liberalism, but I think the way you make your otherwise great point isn't very useful because you are appealing to a false-equivalency rather than discussing it with more nuance. I don't think the neoliberals are literally as a bad as Trump and his sycophants. Perhaps I'm being pedantic as I tend to be sometimes, and maybe you were just saying this for dramatic effect, but my concern is that you are lowering the standards of discussion with that kind of rhetoric. If I am focusing predominately on what I disagree with about your comment here, it's because I actually agree with the predominant kernel of what you are putting forth, and hope that my thoughts may help clarify your position on this stuff in the future.

I think that they are each bad in their own, but very connected ways. Neoliberalism, which McCain clearly ascribes to, is breaking down, and Trump, seeing that and it's ultimate conclusion took the torch. I'm guessing that when you say they are just as bad, you are referring to this system. But still, reading your comment, it's not entirely clear.

Making it about heroes and good and evil, just isn't going to help anyone dissect and understand this. I'm sure this is the narrative you've been experiencing, and I respect that, but I'm hoping maybe I can help you shift that a bit. I agree that he is not a hero, clearly, and I have seen that sort of thought being flung around reddit by lots of people that either don't know better or are political operatives, but I think you could specify this thought without using unnecessary rhetorical devices. (And you could have waited for the person who was upvoted above you and just made the point as a reply to them, so it doesn’t seem so left-field.)

McCain may very well be a person of a notable mention of our time, but not because he is good, but because he helped try and fix the mess he took part in creating. Whether or not he is a hero, just seems irrelevant to me. In the context of reddit, we can still talk about him, upvote articles about what he is doing, all the while not taking part in hero worship. (And hopefully there will always be someone like you around to point out that making him out as a hero is bullshit, albeit more effectively, and at least a few of us down voting the people that put him on a pedestal to even things out a bit.)

Personally, I would rather continue to have neoliberalism than fascism for a while longer so we at least have a chance to figure things out and move more towards socialism. At least people are aware neoliberalism is a problem now (even those we disagree with the most), whereas we apparently don't have enough resistance to fascism built up to resist it if what I've been seeing in the main-stream media and social media is any indicator. We'll continue to slide, and at that point, people like you and I are likely pretty fucked. And not just in America, but abroad as well, since we export a lot of our culture. And the bombs aren't going to stop dropping, either.

Trump is also encouraging fascist tendencies and rhetoric across the country, and purposely creating division by playing groups against each other. This is serious shit, and should not be underestimated. Especially as this sort of rhetoric spreads to other countries and leaders when they see how well it works where there is more unchecked power, the aspects that makes Trump uniquely bad are not limited to just America. So I really don't think you can make a moral equivalency between the two.

The only thing that I can think of that might balance the scale here is Trump's incompetence around his scandals and that he makes it more obvious what he wants to do. And clearly this whole charade could be McCain trying to protect the status quo. If they lose enough troops due to people being scared to join over discriminatory behavior (this just happened too) they are going to have to start drafting people, and that would be much worst for their stake-holders and the overall morale of the herded masses. Still, I think we better place for us to make change from than if Trump stays in power and the GOP further locks down our elections.
