McDonald's menu during 1973.

They are completely capable and refuse to. They brag about it.

Perhaps, I didn't claim the braggarts and liars don't exist. They may brag, but they don't live comfortably, and they definitely don't voluntarily choose that way of life.

They may claim they do, but they don't enjoy fighting with the electric company to keep the electricity on , fighting with the gas company to keep the heat on, fighting with the phone company to keep the phone on, fighting with the landlord to not get evicted, fighting with the cops to not get arrested for the $20 market ticket, waiting in line at the local food bank to get a meager quantity of generic canned goods, waiting for the bus because they have no vehicle, telling their pre-teen kid they have to wear hand-me-downs, telling their teen they can't play sports because of the fees, etc.

There's a way of life that our lowest-income residents have fallen in to, especially those single parents with kids. And once you get in, maybe due to your parents, teenage pregnancy, drug addiction or even a single conviction, ingrained societal racism, or any number of other reasons, there is really no way out. They may be black "welfare queens" in the hood, or white trash in the trailer park, but the end result is the same -- a downward spiral with no way out.

Given the option, they would most certainly work for a living wage where they could support themselves -- where they could pay the water and power bill, pay the rent or mortgage, and give their kids what they want. But that option just doesn't exist for tens of millions of americans. Why work for minimum wage when at the end of the day you still find yourself in the exact same scenario, just with $50 (before tax withholding) in your pocket, which doesn't even cover the cost of childcare or gas/insurance/parking to get to that job?

Many minimum wage employees lose money by working. That's the only reason they might brag about not working. That and "hood" bravado.

And I know this not from my experience as a SJW advocate, but as an evil bill collector who has to see the despair and hopelessness in their eyes every day when I tell them they are about to lose their electricity. I've talked in depth with them. I've walked their hallways. I've watched them count pennies and dimes just to get the few extra dollars they need, and to literally turn over the couch cushions. They may have put themselves in this situation, but they most certainly aren't proud, and definitely don't enjoy it. If they had a way out, they would take it.

So don't tell me about your line of work.
