I wouldn't say it's more important than being quick, though. My notes were always a mess, I was barely working, so by common standards I should be a failed student. Yet information just stays in there and it's well organized in my brain despite the lack of organization to learn it. If you're really good at picking up information, my experience is that how you work won't matter. You'll still be better and faster than people who put a lot of efforts in it but are generally slower. This has been the case with all the people at the very top of their fields that I met (I do research for a living to put things into context). None of them were serious students, just people who grasp things quickly. This has always made me wonder about the very notion of merit that is at the core of our society. If I work twice as less as your average Joe for a better result, why would I deserve more than them? Neither the "fast learners" nor the average Joe chose that state of things.
