Do you find meaning in your work?

Software engineering is a bit like that. I totally understand it. I've not found purpose outside of my work, but I did find pleasure, and enjoyment, progress, and social interaction. IT lacks social status, the feeling like you're actually responsible for something substantial, or important. You work in a team, but that's not the same as working with people on a problem. It doesn't feel like helping people. I've known people to change to nursing from IT, I was thinking of retraining in medicine - except it's just a lot of work for slightly better money, worse hours and lifestyle. I'm going to have kids, I want to be there for them. IT gives me that.

You've got to discover what you want to give, and find a way to give it. iT gives you the funds and flexibility to pursue outside hobbies without the risk of financial destitution. I, for example, like to take photos, don't have to make it money making. I do it for fun.
