So... It does matter what you meant. If it wasn't intended as such then you wouldn't be thanking him for also misrepresenting your point about America. In fact you wouldn't need to thank anyone for defending your beleaguered opinion because it would stand on its own.

But you did thank him for defending you in exactly the manner you insist that you didn't mean. And your opinion doesn't stand on its own. And your language hasn't changed.

At this point it's nearly impossible to determine what you even think you mean.
