Megathread: Alabama Senate Votes to Effectively Ban Abortion in the State

  • Because having a child may be a lifetime commitment. (If that child is profoundly disabled, you could literally spend the rest of your life changing their diapers. Indeed, many anti-abortion laws amplify this possibility.)
  • Because having a child can be physically traumatic.
  • Because "just put the kid up for adoption" only really works if both parents are white and the child is totally healthy.
  • Because you have the right to bodily autonomy.
  • Because it's not really a yes-or-no question. Abortions will happen either way. The question in play is, instead, "do we want women to be able to access safe, affordable abortions, or do we want to make women rely on coathangers and homebrew cocktails involving household solvents".
