[**MEGATHREAD**] Iron Crown Discussions

Not going to be toxic.

I would like to give some feedback on the Iron Crown motorization controversy.

Firstly, I have currently spent $40 in Apex. I think Apex is a good game and want support Respawn for making it.

In my view there's two main issues that are causing people to be upset. 1. relative value. 2. "surprise mechanics" in general.

  1. When I see an $18 skin, the first thing I think of is the relative value; it's 1/3 the price of a AAA game. In regards to the Bloodhound axe, it cost $150-$200. This is one item in a game that's equivalent value is three AAA games. This is significant because it communicates that all hard work that goes into the creation of three $60 games is equivalent to an axe in Apex. I believe this is at the heart of the pricing issue and why in many customers eyes is seen as price gouging.
  2. In my understanding, fundamentally people get angry when expectations don't meet reality. And most of the time the surprise in "surprise mechanics" don't meet people's expectations. When a person sees something they're really excited for, and then open up a box with something they'll never use, that degree of excitement turns to an equal degree of frustration. I don't believe the community likes loot boxes, despite the data, I believe they buy them out of compulsion. (In terms of psychological impact, loot boxes are practically gambling.)

In closing, I really like Apex. I think it's high quality, well thought out game with attention to quality of life details. I have no problem spending money on a good game, however I do see issues in the way in which motorization has been implemented and I don't feel optimistic about the future of Apex given the familiar pattern of events unfolding.

I understand that the internet is crazy, its very easy to be rude (no emotional filter), but I don't think it's an excuse for company representatives to trade insults with fans. When people are roasting you, just keep in mind that all the hate is due to emotional investment in something they love; if nobody cared about the game nobody would say anything.

Best regards
