Melbourne pips Sydney to be the best Australian city for tech firms, according to new report

These days those things stopped happening.

Have they? Some snippets from the article which paint a less dire picture:

Melbourne has been named as one of the best cities in the world for tech firms to operate in, even though Google and Facebook set up their Australian headquarters in Sydney.

Sydney is home to some of Australia’s biggest homegrown tech companies, such as Atlassian, Canva and Airtasker.

The harbour city has also attracted the Asia-Pacific head offices of Silicon Valley giants such as Google, Facebook and Twitter.

“Sydney is seen as the centre of Australia’s tech and startup industry because it’s the most globalised city,” he said. “It’s reminiscent of the competition between New York and Chicago in the 20th century.

“At the moment, Melbourne is looking a lot like Chicago.”

If there's a single reason for not opening shop in Sydney, it's the cost. It's still one of the most desirable places for people on a software engineers salary to live.
