Men die of suicide much more often than women. This is commonly blamed on men's unwillingness to seek help and talk about their problems. This paper disputes the conventional view, emphasizing instead socio-economic issues and obstacles to health care access

Which is very unfortunate because the majority of "suicidal ideations" do not lead to actual actions without additional plans, prior history, access to methods, etc.

r/legaladvice is filled to the brim with stories of people who were committed for just saying they want to die or posting suicidal threats on social media. As damning as their story is, how much people approved of forcibly confining someone for what amounted to something far less than means and a plan is far more damning.

We need to destigmatize seeking help early on to help prevent the later stages where "being locked up"

All this talk by mental health professionals about stigma is almost amusing to me. If someone is suicidal they will be treated in ways that are inherently abusive such as having their autonomy taken away, being tied down if they resist, and occasionally strip searched. If performed on anyone else outside of this sanctioned setting, it would be considered kidnapping, battery, abuse, and in the case of strip searches, sexual assault. Such an experience is inherently indiginifying and stigmatizing, regardless of whether someone is grateful for the indignity of forced treatment and confinement. It doesn't matter if one values their dignity or bodily inviolability more than their life, suicidal thoughts are enough to render any other higher values that the person has null.

I am part of a prochoice suicide community and many people are like myself, not wanting to engage with a system that reserves the ability forcibly confine us for what we may or may not do with the one thing we truly own, our bodies and lives. People have a right to opt out of such a system and that is what happened by creating the forum. The clients that you lock up for being forthcoming are still people who willingly came to you for help, tons of people will never say anything about suicide to you or never even walk in the door due to the specter of forced hospitalization.
