Men of Reddit, what were some life experiences which made you step back and think about how short and dangerously fragile life is?

When I was 19, life punched me in the face one afternoon and I grew up fast.

I had gone out for a walk and come home to find my (then) girlfriend with slit wrists. I remember her barely concsious body lying there, blood all over the sink and floor, the razor in a pool of blood. I called an ambulance and followed the operators instructions until they arrived. Went to the hospital with her, contacted her parents to explain what had happened and stayed with her the entire time. It was heartbreaking to watch. I didn't see it coming. She thankfully lived.

After what seemed like hours, I went outside for a cigarette where I got a call from my mother who told me that one of my friends I'd known since the 3rd grade had died in a car crash that same afternoon.

We were all 19. One tried to take their life. One had died by accident.

That day fucking broke me. Changed me forever.
