indeed. i use mozilla thunderbird. besides conveniently aggregating all of my email in one place and storing copies locally (great when there is an outage of my internet or an email server), it allows me to apply its powerful email filtering engine to rss, which gets treated just like email.

i efficiently browse/dismiss general stuff if i want, filter out things i don't want, filter for things i do want and sort into folders or highlight, and even use filters to forward important items to my phone via sms or my work email. works great on armslist and craigslist too. all that, and no having to vet a service for privacy concerns...it's all standalone on my own computer.

of course, the flip side is that it takes more setting up and babysitting than something like this bot and requires my computer to be on all the time for real-time sms notifications, hence why i non-sarcastically said "neat idea!"...different needs, different tools.
