[Meta] Official Feedback Thread. How are we doing and what can we do to improve the subreddit?

Mostly good, but there can be some improvements both from the mod side and the user side.

User side:

  • Interact with posters who make submissions, whether they be comments or original posts. Every time I go into the "What are you Playing Wednesday?" thread, I see about 15-20 comments sitting between 1 and 3 points. It seems that most users are coming here to talk about their own personal opinions, instead of discussing what others want to discuss. The users (myself included) need to do better at this.

  • Posting more original content. The fact that this space is curated and low-effort (more on this later) posts are culled gives us a great opportunity to generate real, non-circlejerky posts and comment threads, but this rarely materializes. It's great that we can theoretically post an article about game specs without it devolving into a pissing match between fanboys, but this doesn't seem to happen as much as it should. This won't ever be a 10,000 post-a-day sub like /r/games, but it could be more productive than 50/week.

Mod side:

Before I speak, let me note that all of the following is posted without malice. These thoughts are truly meant to improve the sub and should not be taken as any kind of personal slight. If any of the wording seems cumbersome, I apologize.

  • Lately - and by that I mean "since the rule 2 clarification and subsequent cosplay post that I assume sparked this meta-discussion" - it has appeared that there is a rift between the mod-side and the user-side. To be blunt, it appears that the definition of "low-effort" applied to this sub is one created by /u/Throwaway_4_opinions alone. Addressing the fallout from the cosplay post specifically, it appears from the user-side that low-effort posts either by /u/Throwaway_4_opinions or about things related to gaming that /u/Throwaway_4_opinions likes are immune from the standard "low-effort" removal policy. The cosplay post specifically was just a picture, with no accompanying post by /u/Throwaway_4_opinions explaining anything about the picture - including any indication that it was not original content or credit to the content creator until other users made the effort - or asking any questions to generate discussion. While undoubtedly some users would like there to never be any posts about cosplay in this sub, at the very least making a "Post and talk about your favorite cosplay" thread and then posting the image inside that would be more in line with the rules as a whole and would not introduce unnecessary "protected classes" into the rules. If rule 2 is truly meant to mean "no memes," then remove the words "image macro" (unnecessary and confusing; nobody calls memes 'image macros') and allow other image-based posts through. But if it's meant to bar low-effort posts, apply it categorically without nepotism towards one's own preferences.
