Meta has to pay walkie-talkie app $174 million for infringing on its patents, jury says

This is what happens in most patent cases. They are decided in a Federal Court, with varying degrees of Judge competency to decide Patent Law related cases. The appeals are consolidated in one place, CAFC in DC. This court has Judges who are all basically experts in Patent Law (as that is what that appeals court mostly deals with), which is an arcane corner of law that most lawyers and judges don't deal with. Usually, in most regular cases; appeals are only on matters of law and not matters of fact. Meaning, the appeal can only be whether the Judge and the Jury actually followed the law; and not the facts underlying the case. However, CAFC as a matter of routine; does the determination of facts de-novo. Meaning, the circuit court's determination of the facts are disregarded and the CAFC does claim construction from scratch. A lot of patents are rendered invalid by CAFC. Which is what I am expecting will happen here. And as it is an appeals court; there is no juries to deal with.
