Metaxas vs Venizelos: A clash of titans

Venizelos was a republican pencil pusher bourgeois. Metaxas was a military man on the frontlines (Like the majority of Royalists, including the Royal family itself that sent it's young princes to the front lines during the Balkan Wars, Asian Minor Campaign, etc. Many Greeks don't even realize that George II, Prince Alexander, Prince Andrew(who Venizelos tried to execute), etc actually fought in formal military roles on the front lines as infantry and cavalry, b-but the job creators sending our sons to fight their wars!!)

Metaxas was also very calculated and intelligent. He knew the Asian minor Campaign would end in disaster, while Venizelos a populist at heart made eradicate decisions and started a war Greece could never have finished, far beyond it's military, financial, and logistical capacity despite all the prior warnings he had. And then he called a very suspicious election, probably realizing the course the war would take and wanted to redirect his failure on his political opponents. Funny how in Greece the "warmongering bourgeoisie" were the liberal republicans, whilst the Monarchists were the more level headed, and realistic, peace and people oriented bunch.

And now today in Greece, Statues of Mr. Venizelos are all around, meanwhile non to Metaxas. Of course this is because Venizelos oligarchic family is still in politics today (Sorry Mitostakis still love you) so of course the historical narrative favors him and the other Republican heroes.

Just a reminder when Greeks talk about "Muh Bourgeois" Greece voted the only opposition of the Oligarchic Bourgeoisie, corrupt political families in the 70's. The Monarchy was their last opponent
