Mike Huckabee: No matter what the president said about Charlottesville, he would have been condemned -- “... Nothing will ever satisfy the Trump haters. And there are a lot of Trump haters within the Republican Party who jumped on him as well.”

With respect to Mr. Huckabee, I have to disagree. Our President would have been loudly, vocally praised by true Conservatives (people whose support he needs to enact his agenda) had he spoken against the thugs in Charlottesville more forcefully and with more specificity. Conservatives want to like Donald Trump. He's a Republican (ostensibly) and much of his stated agenda, like tax reform and healthcare reform, aligns with the Conservative movement. Yet while the President has never been shy to attack with fury and specificity over what many would consider trivial matters, he consistently tip-toes around the White Supremacists. We saw it with David Duke in the Jake Tapper interview a year ago. We saw it during the campaign. We saw it yesterday in Charlottesville. This makes Conservatives uncomfortable. Perhaps folks on the Left would have found reasons to attack the President regardless of his response (though he certainly made it easier). But the Right - the Mitch McConnells, the Paul Ryans, the Ted Cruzes - would have been ECSTATIC had Trump forcefully repudiated the White Supremacists. After all, if Conservatism is prefaced on a belief that society and its values shouldn't change faster that people can handle, aren't the ultra-right, reactionary policies of the Alt-Right antithetical to Conservatism?
