I think it has to do with film schools and nepotism.

There is a certain level of privilege to afford film school and the possibility of never having a steady career. So this is the next crop out and they are a highly cynical bunch that has been taught diversity, but they have never experienced it in a real, non college setting. They probably see Star Trek as a neo-liberal progressive thing and they are trying to add a post-modern take on it, but don't really understand Agency, self-determination, and cultural relativism, so they end up producing fake version that lean into nihilism instead of their intended goal.

Or in non big words, they are cynical and don't get it.
