military and inattentive adhd

I agree. What if he's sent to combat and misses something critical? A mistake or inattention could impact the safety of himself or others around him. I know everyone is different and I only have my own perspective of this disorder, but based on my experiences I would never trust myself enough to join the military. Your son may be different, so I wish him the very best if he does choose to stick it out. He might want to consider an ADHD coach to help him learn tools to improve in the areas where he struggles. Those of us diagnosed later in life are proof that you don't necessarily need meds to get by. A lot of us learned little tricks and habits along the way (which a coach will help with).
