Mitchell Trubisky: Greatest QB in Chicago Bears History or Bust.

The cost to move up (regardless of one spot or not) was nothing compared to the prices other teams have paid before them. At the end of the day it was confirmed that multiple teams wanted the number 2 pick. Pace pulled the trigger and got his guy. Pace’s drafting has been impressive so that’s one of the reasons why I was at peace with the trade once time passed.

Judging from all the offseason news, Mitch seems to be determined, passionate and all on board to get Chicago back to being a competitive team which reassured me that drafting Mitch wasn’t a mistake regardless of waiting a year to watch him play.

Lets look at some other teams that moved to the second spot to pick a player.

The first trade. Washington gave up not one, not two but THREE first round draft picks to move up four spots in 2012 to pick 2nd overall (RGIII). Not to mention that two of those picks were in the top ten. To top it all off they had to get rid of a high 2nd rounder that year too. In total Washington gave up four extremely valuable picks for one pick in return.

The second trade was the Eagles moving up 6 spots to draft Carson Wentz in 2016. Philly did acquire a 4th rounder for 2017 but they had to fork over two 1st round picks (2016 8th overall and 2017 12th overall), a 3rd and 4th in 2016 as well (77th and 100th) and a 2nd overall pick in 2018. A lot of fans on social media think Carson was a day 1 starter, albeit that's mainly the fans who root for the Eagles so there's a little bit of bias involved, but many people including myself think that Wentz would have greatly benefited from backing up a starter. Considering they traded Bradford away for the 14th pick, they still could have picked up a bridge QB (sounds like team we know) to hold the fort until Carson developed a little bit more. Philly had a strong start last season but they ended up with a 7-9 record and missed the playoffs that year anyways so it doesn't seem like he was exactly NFL ready right out of the gate.

FINALLY we can talk about this horrendous Bears trade where they mortgaged all of their picks to draft a quarterback. Wait… If the chart above is right they traded the exact same amount of picks as Washington did? Except the Bears only gave up one 1st round pick while the Redskins gave up three? Most people don't realize that late round picks don't always turn into Antonio Brown (6th round), Tom Brady (6th round) or Jordan Howard (5th round), most are players coming off the bench to give the starters breaks, or they’re easily replaceable units. Not to mention Pace recouped some of the picks back in this draft. Do I think it was a bad trade on Chicago’s part? No not really, they filled a hole that needed to be filled. Pace and co. also signed Glennon to a team friendly contract that only guarantees a big portion of money the first year and barely any the second year (13 mill in 2017 and 2.5 mill in 2018). His contract isn't even a burden on the cap in 2018 so Chicago can go out and spend on the free agents, sign players to contract extensions (hopefully Hicks), etc. So waiting a year or so for Trubisky to understand the offence more, create chemistry with his o-line, receivers, tight ends, running backs and the coaches seems like a pretty good plan to me. I'd rather have Mitch prepare for a year instead of getting thrown into a situation where his confidence can get ruined all because "A year of job training is better than preparing him to be QB we need."

It might take less time for Trubs to usurp Glennon (mid season takeover) or it might take more, but at the end of the day months after the draft passed I think the trade up one spot for Trubisky was worth the price we paid regardless of if he starts next season.
