Mobile App Recommendations?

[–]david_131 2 points 5 hours ago*  Gurunavi for searching for restaurants. http://www.gnavi.co.jp/en/mobile/  Tabimori which has a variety of sightseeing, weather, flight information, etc. http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/fun/app/tabimori/  Some people like the Hyperdia App although I just use the main website. Some suggestions from others:- Tokyo Metro app Navitime I always recommend you rent a pocket wifi or buy a data SIM card while you are in Japan so you can stay connected. permalinksavereportgive goldreply [–]Osulagh 1 point 2 hours ago  What "basic translator"? If you haven't used Google Translate in a while, you'll be surprised by the updates. permalinksavereportgive goldreply [–]Halistor [S] 1 point an hour ago  It's just called Learn Japanese and its got all the basic sayings, shouldn't really call it a translator haha. permalinksaveparentreportgive goldreply [–]Iddqd1995 1 point an hour ago  Used Hyperdia app when I was there. Free app for like a month when you first get it, so wait until you're about to leave. That, Google Maps and a Pocket Wifi turned my Tokyo trip from great to amazing. permalinksavereportgive goldreply 116/10000BoldItalicstrikesupLink>QuoteCode•Bullets1.NumbersTable Commenting as: Nahraa macros

You may also want to test apps out with your phone in airplane mode to see if they still work that way (i.e., without data). I'm mapping my itinerary in a Google Map which I'm planning to export as KML and then import into an offline maps app . I tried a few different apps, but maps.me  is the one I like best precisely because of this feature. Not sure if I'll use it as my backup or as my primary map tool in Japan. A currency converter is going to be handy to have. There are quite a few out there; I chose one pretty much at random. Hyperdia  is the handiest looking app I've found for train travel, especially with its JR Pass filter. It needs data. I've seen a few other train timetable & map apps but they don't seem to be kept up to date and AFAICT they offer nothing a paper map doesn't already provide. For translation, I'm looking forward to trying out yomiwa . If you have data, the iOS version of Google Translate  recently added a similar camera-based translation service (it's been in the Android version forever), which probably works better. If you'd like an interactive travel guide type thing, City Maps 2Go  and TripAdvisor City Guides  have downloadable city guides for Tokyo and Kyoto. I haven't played with their Tokyo/Kyoto guides much yet, but have had luck with their London and Paris guides in the past. permalinksavereportgive goldreply

Are there any good alternatives to the Hyperdia app? For some reason both my tablet and smartphone is unsupported..
