A modest plea...

My position on all this is limited to roads without bike lanes. I have no opinion otherwise. What I can tell you is that cyclists do, without fail, affect the flow of traffic. If the traffic speed is normally 35 and he's doing 10-15, everyone has to slow down and move over. That can affect traffic for miles when it's heavy enough. It's especially bad when the left (closest to oncoming) lane is full and anyone approaching the cyclist from behind has to slow down. It's when people aren't paying attention that things get really bad. There is no doubt in my mind that having cyclists on the road mixed with traffic cause problems that would not exist if they weren't there. Yes, there are problems among cars in and of themselves, but cyclists only exacerbate the situation. Again, you're arguing that traffic all around the cyclist should have to be modified to accommodate someone who isn't even travelling the same speed as the traffic. You talk about slowing down and moving over. Those are traffic interruptions and modifications. As far as handicap vehicles, I'm not sure what you mean, but of course there are emergency vehicles. On the uncommon occasion traffic is altered to accommodate. That's really not even the same ballpark though. I might have to pull over to let an ambulance by maybe once every 6 weeks. Regardless, I'm a hell of a lot less concerned about an ambulance which is travelling the speed limit and very obvious and reacted to from very far away than some guy on a bike trying to keep up with traffic.
