It seems to take nothing from the game except the monsters and the makeshift weapons. They've taken a unique fantasy world with a simplistic back story and tried to give it complexity by linking it to current day earth. The trailer itself is kind of self aware that it's an effort to make shitty pop culture references and try to "Guardians of the Galaxy" the plot. They have no shame in acknowledging that it's going to be in poor taste.

Milla Jovovich and her husband have taken up the mantle Uwe Boll once held, by repeatedly acquiring movie rights to gaming franchises with subpar plots. People watch them out of spite, because they want to laugh at how bad they are. It's a profitable enterprise, but it does little justice for the games and the people who play them.
