A month into its release, World of Warcraft's Battle for Azeroth is in bad shape.

It'll be interesting to see if newer MMOs ever deal with this or if we see any innovation in the next 10 years.

Rift kind of solved this with the autoleveling feature - you could join lower ranks in their quests and the game would automatically drop you to their level but with all of your abilities and gear (with some tuning to the gear to prevent you from being too OP). In return, the de-leveled player would get some global currency or lootboxes appropriate for their level.

It had the duel effect of re-opening old content for higher leveled players while also populating low-level quests and hubs for newbies who would otherwise be completely alone (great for Rift's population issues).
