Monthly What are My Chances? Thread

So this is my second time applying, got waitlisted at a couple state schools, some before II, some after. I'm still on the waitlist at my first choice school (UB), but I'm expecting to have to reapply. That will probably be the only MD school I reapply to, the rest will be my first time applying. I only heard back from about half the DO schools I applied to last cycle (all rejections), but I think that's because only some schools accepted my letters. I'll probably reapply to LECOM and Edward Via, but the rest of the DO schools will be new. My stats are about or just below the 50th percentile for the schools I'm applying to, I think the lack of volunteering is what kept me out. I spent most of my college career getting my GPA up after a 3.1 my freshman year, so I'm focusing on volunteering during my gap year. Year in school - Just graduated two weeks ago, taking a gap year. Country/state of residence - New York. Schools to which you are applying - School Degree SUNY Buffalo MD Albany Medical College MD Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine MD Loyola Chicago MD Morehouse School of Medicine MD Rush Medical College MD ACOM DO Edward Via DO LECOM DO MSUCOM DO Pacific Northwest DO PCOM DO WVCOM DO Cumulative GPA - 3.7, very strong upward trend. Science GPA - Haven't submitted through AMCAS yet, so not too sure. Less than the 3.7, though. MCAT Scores - 509 Research – include any abstracts/posters/publications and how you were credited (eg. First author, senior author, etc) - I did research in an addiction lab for a year, probably about 216 hours. I presented a poster on our findings there last year. I started doing research in a hospital manipulating fMRI data for studies looking at MS markers last month. I go in for 25 hours a week. Volunteering (clinical) – include hours/sites - I did about 30 hours of escort work a few years ago, but that's about it. Physician shadowing – include hours/specialties - I shadowed a cardiologist for a day my junior year, for five hours. I spent last summer shadowing a radiologist for a few hundred hours. I have a list of neurologists recommended to me that I'm working through to see if I can shadow any of them this summer. I'm also looking for a DO to shadow. Non-clinical volunteering - About 30 hours fixing up houses for refugee families to live in affordably. Helped out with blood drives. Those were both a few years ago. I'm going to volunteer at the main fundraiser for the cancer institute in my city (Ride for Roswell) and start volunteering with the American Diabetes Association this summer. Extracurricular activities - Intramural hockey captain, been in a band for years. Some computer science stuff on the side. Employment history - Pharmacy technician for four years. Immediate family members in medicine? (y/n) - No Specialty of interest - Neurology Graduate degrees - B.S. Biomedical Sciences, Minor is Pharmacology/Toxicology Interest in rural health (y/n) - Yes
