The more I hear about developer crunch and work practices the more insulted and less empathetic I become.

It's 100% personal responsibility to speak up for yourself of what is too much. Employers have employees that range from: (1) work every hour possible and to prioritize having as much money as possible, to (2) work only hours needed to prioritize having as much personal time as possible, and (3) everything in between.

Someone that wants to work extra shouldn't be punished because someone that didn't, forced everyone to have their wages tied down to standard hours, in the same way someone that doesn't want to work extra shouldn't be forced to work longer because someone is working more.

In my job, more than half our employees are overtime milkers, and I'm in the minority for doing working for my time off. I have to say no a lot and had to practice having touch conversations. But in the end I'm better for it, so is my employer, and the few others in my company like me because everyone grows from those moments.

I know not every situation is the same, but if you are open and honest often and get the to see the results of how your employer cares about employee health, then you will know very fast if you want to continue to support their company by working for them.
