You need to put into context that 50% divorce figure.

1) The rate doesn't mean that half of marriages end in divorce. It means that, in a given year, for each divorce, two couples have gotten married.

2) That figure that is frequently cited is taken from the time period right after divorce became social acceptable and there was a boom in divorces from people who couldn't have made that choice earlier. People that were trapped in miserable marriages for decades finally were able to pull the plug. Currently, in the US, the divorce rate is at 39%.

3) The divorce rates vary significantly according to a couple of factors (age and educational/income levels), so the general rate shouldn't be applied to everyone.Couples that have master's degrees and have gotten married after 25 have a low chance of divorce.
