1.7/1.8's snapshots were the most recent I've played of Minecraft. I've heard that 1.9 ruins the combat and also heard something about the golden apples being nerfed.

I used to be a huge fan of Minecraft, but after a couple of incidents and due to the community and its bad reputation I left. I've played and added many mods to my experience but they don't seem to do much and I end up getting bored.

I was introduced to Terraria in early-to-mid 2014 through an incident on a YouTube video titled "Terraria vs. Minecraft" in which I made a comment (out of anger over something that happened in school, bad excuse I know) stating how I didn't really think the video was fair... this (nowadays former ex-friend) user talked to me about the incident and we became friends and he introduced me to Terraria which I started playing. I was exactly what I wanted to see from Minecraft; more enemies, more ores (and not just random recolored irons/golds), more things to do, more bosses, rare drops, etc.

TL;DR I haven't played Minecraft since 1.8's snapshots (early 2014), Minecraft isn't that great nowadays from what I've heard, I got introduced to Terraria through an incident, and Terraria had what I had hoped to see in Minecraft.
