As a trained ward organist beginning at an age before I was old enough to drive, and as a former professional musician who refused to dumb down the hymns and play them at funeral tempo (and who once got to play the Tabernacle organ), it’s been my experience that most wards have dreadful, barely competent organists.

Most of the decent ward organists I have known have left Mormonism. This isn’t statistically significant, and I’ve never seen a study, but personally I have never known a straight male church organist - in any denomination. I’m sure they exist in the wild; I just haven’t known any. We gay dudes have left and taken our musical gifts with us.
