Mother failed step 3 twice, and lost her residency because of it. Any advice?

This. I know that a lot of us are dancing around the core of the issue because we don't want to be mean. But it needs to be said: OP's mother's story is absolutely chock full of red flags.

  • Drops out of med school

  • Reenters back into med school 10 years later (ie likely forgetting every single thing from preclinical classes)

  • "She spent about a few years applying for residency and getting rejected" <---- WHAT? You can't just casually throw this in without explanation. A USMD failing to get into residency multiple times in a row is a huge issue and indicates severe deficiencies in either knowledge fund, clinical skills, personality, or all three.

  • Failed Step 3 twice

  • Dismissed from residency

I'm sorry but at some point you need to know when to fold. Forget about trying to reenter residency. OP's mother is best served at this point using her status as a PGY1-completed physician and going to work. Insurance companies. Consulting companies. Urgent cares. There's a lot of stuff you can do. It won't pay as well as a doctor who completed residency, but it's time to get realistic and understand that the chances of you doing that are about 5%.
