Motivational Statement Advice

I've updated my statement with your comment in mind. Here it is below, thoughts?

I believe to be the best person that I can be, it is important to see life through different lenses. To fully understand others perspective, you have to engage them in “their there”. While there are many opportunities to serve abroad, committing to serve the Peace Corps will genuinely assimilate me with community that I will serve and help bridge two cultures. Stepping outside of my comfort zone has never fazed me but instead it has motivated me to break down the superficial boundaries that divide us. We are all human. I can envision no better experience than the Peace Corps to help shape my worldview and help facilitate becoming a global citizen.

I’ve been fortunate enough to assist policy implementation with the U.S. State Department and the European Union. During my time abroad, the European migrant crisis had just begun to garner international attention. As I sat in on discussions by parliamentary members detailing the horrid conditions the migrants were suffering, I sympathized with the stories presented and felt compelled to take action. I wanted to be apart of the solution. While I am proud of the fact that I have assisted in policy research to find solutions to large-scale problems as an intern, the greatest satisfaction I have felt is when I see the direct results of my work. Whether it’s coaching a middle school basketball team, developing the skills of inner city youth, or tutoring students in math and reading, there is no better feeling than aiding in the growth of a child. I recall the moment one of the students I tutored finally understood how to do long division. He had struggled the entire lesson but nonetheless was determined to do well on the assignment and we spent time extra time studying. The next day he received a perfect score on the practice test. Grinning ear to ear, he approached me to tell me that math was his favorite subject and he was excited to work on more problems. I had shared the joy and success with the student and felt that I had accomplished my job as a tutor. No one will understand everything taught to them completely but if you can foster a love for learning, the possibilities are endless. These experiences have all compelled me to further pursue a life-long dedication to community service.

I understand that the 27-month commitment to serve will present many challenges but at the same time I recognize that these hardships will help enrich who I am as a person. The biggest concern I have entering service is attaining a level of language fluency that will allow me to have meaningful interactions with my community members. I understand that communicating in the native tongue of the country I serve is important to building rapport and am confident that, with much practice and immersion, I will develop the language skills needed to be successful in not only learning about their culture but in sharing my own.
