Moving to Omaha from Boise

Omaha is very different from Boise, in just about every way. Here’s my experience:

Jobs are plentiful compared to Boise and wages are higher with rents lower to similar. The standard of living here is higher by leaps and bounds. Grocery stores are kind of expensive, though, with most having prices compared to Albertson’s. I miss WinCo.

Omaha is uglier. Not much more to say there. There aren’t many outdoorsy things to do, but beyond that, driving around, you’ll see almost nothing but half-occupied strip malls and Taco Bell’s. It’s a very typical looking midsize Midwest city in that regard.

The standard American Dream is alive and well here. People are nice, but less liberal and much judgier because aspirations are similar and deviating from them is rare. You graduate from UNO, get married, move to a big house out in Elkhorn and have kids, all while hanging with your cousins and high school friends. I know SO many people this describes. Omaha poverty and Boise poverty are very different because of the elevated standard of living. Also, this isn’t a big transplant area, two factors I think contribute. Leading to...

It’s not easy to date or make friends here. In Boise I could go meet someone new to hang out with any time I went downtown. That just doesn’t happen here. It’s depressingly insular.

Another thing about people here: they’re not crunchy. There’s no equivalent of North End here, no co-op, almost no bike culture to speak of and everyone drives. I can’t emphasize this enough. Everyone drives. You can’t live in Omaha without a car.

There’s tons of good food here. If you like food and drink, Omaha is great. Lots of awesome vegan food.

I could go on and on. But bottom line, brutally honest: you’ll make money here, but you might hate it a little bit coming from Boise if you hold certain things about Boise very dear.
