MRW I learn that the candidate running unopposed for student body president is also a registered sex offender.

Here is the master post of information!

Tony Funchess is currently running unopposed for president of the Associated Students of Portland State University. His candidate was forced to drop out of the race today. Tony has been convicted of two sex crimes: one charge of second degree of attempted rape in 2000 when Funchess was 23 and the victim was 14 and one charge of third degree sodomy in 2005 when Funchess was 28 and his victim was 16. He served a prison term from 2007-2010 and is required to be on the registered sex offender list for life.

Our biggest problem with Tony running is that as student body president, he is going to serve as the voice of the students on multiple topics, including sexual assault. I and other students on campus are absolutely not comfortable with a registered sex offender being in this position. He wants to lead the conversation, we don't think he should.

Here are some articles on the issue, for interested readers.

Article 5 is old but it does include this quotation from Tony himself: "I can respect folks for having their own opinions...I have had challenges in my past but my present and my involvement speaks to how I am a role model." Because a registered sex offender can also be a role model?

Please feel to ask me more questions!
