Take Welsh for example, the "official" Welsh used in the south of Wales is completely different to the Welsh used in North Wales where it's a first language!
Official words aren't always the same as used words.
Whilst it's true I hadn't heard Irish used to refer to the language by itself until I heard it used that way by Americans or in American media, I am not denying that it may be used that way by people who are Irish.
As I said in a different comment, and my edit, it turns out (like everything related to Ireland) it's surprisingly complicated, and all these different worda are used in different contexts.
