Multilingual people of reddit what is your most awkward story of someone talking in a different language thinking no one is listening?

I’m a Chinese American who was born and raised in Shanghai. One time when I was still a kid my mom and I walked into a restaurant that was pretty packed and the waiter was trying to look for a place to seat us. There’s this guy who was sitting alone at a table for four and it seems like he’s with one other person while the other chair was empty and the last chair just had a handbag on it. So the waiter just moves the bag to the chair across from the guy that seemed to be occupied and drags the two other chairs and the empty table to make room for me and my mom and the guy doesn’t even notice or acknowledge it. A few minutes later this lady walks to the table next to us and she asks the guy if he touched her bag and he was like no I don’t know who moved it. They’re having this conversation in English and she’s getting kinda mad so she’s saying things like you weren’t even watching my bag while I was gone? Do you know how much it costs? It’s brand new! That fat old lady and the dirty little girl over there better not have laid their fingers on it. (it’s been a while so I’m paraphrasing). So my mom turns towards her and replies in English basically telling her that the waiter was the one who moved it and literally nobody cares about her bag. And she immediately shuts up and looks extremely embarrassed then left soon after.
