I support universal background checks that include mental health evaluations. I also support required training to obtain a license. However, you lost me on your second note as bolt-action rifles are useless for home defense, especially against a home intruder armed with a handgun. For home defense I could give up a semi-automatic rifle for a higher-capacity shotgun or a handgun. Civilians shouldn't need a machine gun or a sniper rifle.

But given how many firearms are out there in public, would any of these measures end school shootings in my lifetime? Not a chance, so there have to be additional measures on top of sensible firearm restrictions.
