Yes! This may be an unpopular opinion in itself but after listening to Mariah Carey’s Daydream album in the intended order, I think of it as highly artistic, cohesive and an example of honest songwriting!
It starts with a multitude of songs she had to keep churning out to appease her controlling and abusive husband/record label owner.
They’re romantic and great to listen to, but it seemed so disingenuous at the time. Particularly a song called “I Am Free” she wrote while simultaneously trying to escape a marriage she described as being like a prisoner.
The penultimate song then seems to discount all those platitudes by ending with “it’s just a fantasy...”
Finally, a brooding ballad about her insecurities, struggles and the picture perfect way her life is presented in the media concludes the album. Good stuff.
