Why we must resist the cult of ‘performative workaholism’: Elon Musk and his ilk ‘thank god it’s Monday’, don’t stop when they’re tired, and regularly pull 80-hour weeks. It is now normal to be obsessed with work – but why? And how can we stop?

I don’t have an issue with people like Musk working crazy hours, or even a lot of lesser lights.

The root of America’s dumb workaholic culture is our out of date labor laws. The wage floor to be potentially classifiable as “exempt” is a paltry 26k, if I recall, and that might have made sense in 1980 but it’s idiotic now.

Make the floor something more reasonable like 80k and employers will have to burn overtime to keep average workers at work past forty hours. Most won’t.

At that point most of those who might be pressured into working those kinds of hours on a regular basis would be employees with a fair amount of leverage to negotiate or tell the employer to kick rocks if they don’t like the deal.

There are a lot of difficult intractable social problems but this one, I feel, is pretty solvable
