My [25/F] boyfriend [25/M] of 2 years is a recovered opiate addict as of earlier this year. He smokes weed everyday and seems to take dexedrine quite regularly, how do I know if it's a problem?

Hi! On and off addict here. I would say that frequency of use isn’t actually the best way to determine whether or not your boyfriend’s an addict, ESPECIALLY since he seems to be hiding it, and nothing you can say or do immediately will fix this. The best way to help with an addiction isn’t to immediately confront or try to force a change in behavior— the best way is to make yourself a resource. Don’t make negative statements about his drug use, and never put him on the defensive (this doesn’t mean encourage it). Make it absolutely clear to him that you won’t judge him for his use or abuse, and that will make it much easier for him to open himself to you and be honest about the scale of his drug use. Only then will you be able to tell whether he’s addicted, and be able to have the ability to convince him he can change if needed.
