My account book plan - seeking criticism

We average 250 transactions per month. And if you add in transfers of money (paying credit card etc.) that’s actually 300.

That's a lot. I used to be at that volume too, when I was a two person one dog household. Now I'm a one person household, so things are simple.

Some tips that I am learning and trying to apply to reduce number of transactions:

  • Buy in bulk. Giant bags of dog food, rice, etc. Buy groceries once a week, plan for the whole week.

  • Aggregate bills. I don't itemize Amazon; that would be too much. So I treat my entire Amazon monthly payment as one transaction. This helps tremendously. I also use a special charge card at work for the cafeteria, and I just load money on it once a quarter. So I'm tracking 4 transactions a year, rather than 20 a month!

  • Review your monthly Outflows. Where is it all going, both by volume of transactions, and dollar amounts? If you see lots of annoying little transactions peppering your log, think about how you can consolidate or eliminate them. For instance, I was paying $2-4 a day for parking 3-4 days a week. While the money is nothing to me, I just hated having so many little transactions! So I redesigned my commuting habits so that I only pay parking 0-1 times a month. Just seeing everything laid out on paper in front of me helped me confront the reality of my spending, both its volume and amounts, and refine it.
