Just food for thought;

Probably just reading too much in to things, but...

He’s 50,

he sends me the simplest things to do for him even when I’m on holiday

he has constant mood swings

Any chance he is obese? Was he "normal" before? any other symptoms.

Asking as with age you do get things like onset of diabetes which can lead to mood swings and shit with some people. Cognitive decline can also be an issue even for people in their 50s so him sending you that simple task and trying to cover down on all else with "i know what i'm doing" plus the egotripping may just be him trying to hide that decline behind bravado and micromanagement. Diabetes, shitty diet, etc. can make such things way worse... not to even mention things that may be going on health wise.

Excessive concern about "legacy" as interpreted in to that wikipedia page bit is one more potential sign that there is way more going on than a simple midlife crisis.

As for that boss from before.. JFC what a creeper.
