My boyfriend loses keys all the time and it annoys me beyond measure

I have this problem, and it annoys people around me too. They frequently say, just like you do, to just put my keys in the same place every time. I have a key hook beside my door on which I can hang my keys. I know it should be simple.

The point is, and this is something that people like you (who do not have this problem) usually don't understand is that if I were capable of being constantly aware of where I was putting my keys, then I would not have this problem in the first place.

For example, I hang my keys on the hook most of the time, but if there is anything going on what is different from the normal muscle memory (like if I have something else in my hands, if I'm not the one that unlocks the door at that time, if I have to run out to my car for something, etc) then chances are that I will not place my keys on that hook and I will have no memory whatsoever of doing anything with my keys at all.

It is maddeningly frustrating. I have a similar problem with my ID, with my cell phone, basically with anything that I'm expected to keep up with but also frequently use. It's an issue with attention, being present in the moment and actively aware of where my hands are at all times. People who don't have this problem can't understand it and think it's just a choice.

So I kinda sorta get his rude quip about your glasses though I agree he can't have it both ways- he shouldn't make fun of something you can't help and he shouldn't ask you for assistance if he's going to make fun of your suggestions. All that is out of line. But the comparison is similar- you can't see without your glasses, and if you just try harder, you still can't see without your glasses. It's like that with attention for some of us.
