My brother asked me a question: If a member went to Colorado and smoked legal weed, could they still go to the temple? Why/Why Not?

General Authorities have frequently included 'recreational drugs' to be contrary to the WoW. So the question is, is there a category of drugs which are recreational, or is it wrong to use any drug in a recreational manner? We also believe in maintaining our freedom from addiction and habit-forming activities. So let's look at some substances: Alcohol: completely legal, but specifically prohibited by WoW. Harmful, removes inhibitions, addictive. It's consumption is only ever recreational or as a result of addiction. Tea/Coffee: also legal, not even age restricted, prohibited in WoW. Highly addictive & habit forming; primarily due to caffeine content. Consumption is typically as a result of addiction/habit, or may be recreational to 'feel better/normal'. Caffeine: legal, church statement specifically states that it's not prohibited by any church teaching. Addictive, long term use can have nasty health effects. Consumption either due to addiction (I.e. "Need" it to feel normal/awake) or for staying awake. Marihuana: legal in some places, no official church guidelines (that I have ever been able to find). Not addictive or habit-forming. Not typically harmful, has medical uses, but is mostly used recreationally. Aspirin: legal, permitted by church doctrine. Addictive, can be recreational, medical. Tobacco: legal, prohibited in WoW. Highly addictive and habit-forming. Only used recreationally. Nicotine: legal, no church guidelines. Highly addictive and habit-forming. Not known to be harmful. Usually recreational, arguably used medicinally to aid stopping smoking. Sugar: legal, essential. Addictive, habit forming. Potentially harmful long-term. Can be used recreationally in a sense. Chocolate: legal, not prohibited. Addictive, habit-forming. Consumption only recreational.

WoW issues like these are very difficult to unravel; and we are supposed to be self-aware of ourselves to decide what is an issue for us individually. Is there a problem with drinking Cola? No. Is it an issue if someone says they can't function normally without drinking Coke? Yes. Could you pass a temple recommend interview if you use e-cigarettes/nicotine gum/patches? Yes. Would you be obeying the spirit of the law by simply replacing tobacco with nicotine supplements, but not actually trying to deal with the addiction? No. Is there anything wrong with enjoying sugar/chocolate? No. Is there a problem with becoming addicted to them? Yes. I find an interesting grey area with Caffeine. In principle there seems to be nothing wrong with genuinely using it in order to get necessary work done. However, if the reason you'd run out of time was because you spent it unwisely on recreational activities, then one could argue that the use of the drug is itself recreational.
