My childhood nightmare is now a NFT.

Think of it like a trading card.

All the NFT does is apply a (more or less) democratically agreed upon "authentic" series of files. Ideally the authentic series is originating from the creators themselves, providing them with a revenue stream. It allows an artist to create scarcity for their digital work.

It's not a big deal if you're not into collecting digital items (e.g., CSGO skins). Where I think NFT has a future is in social media - ie, having a profile picture that's an authentic work by some artist or a rare roll from a generator. It's all status and posturing and so forth, but there is proven value in stuff like this.

Where it loses its potential is in the physical, non-digital world. An artist who makes STLs for 3D printing is going to have a much more difficult time monetizing their sculpts from NFT, since the primary realm of exposure is physical. Whether a model was printed from an "authentic" file is way less relevant.
